Two years ago when the teams of “my generation” were all in their formative states, we all practiced weekly. Actually, we all practiced on Sundays at noon. It was always humorous to me to see the Penguins, Robots, S&CCers and us Datans out on Saturday night partying and simultaneously moaning about having to get up early. Then there we’d all be, nine hours later, hungover at the UCB training center. But that doesn’t seem to be the case anymore. Of those groups, I think only Fat Penguin practices weekly still (please correct me if I’m wrong).

We try to. (It’s tough right now because we’re in-between having a regular coach.)

I will use Fat Penguin as an example now, because I feel that I’ve had the unique opportunity to watch them grow as a team over the last two years. They practice weekly and it shows. They all have an obvious commitment and sense of investment that really shines through when they are playing together, and this comes from over 1500 hours of practicing, probably 700+ hours of post-practice-lunching, and going to numerous festivals together. They host shows at Under St. Mark’s, a venue that has real stakes and money attached, and always knock it out of the park in the commitment, dedication and skill areas. Whether it’s a great show or a bad show, and I’ll honestly say I’ve seen them do both, they always impress me with how tight they are. This, to me, proves that practicing and pushing your team is crucial. I love Fat Penguin, watching them and hanging out with them.

Not to turn this into a Fat Penguin Love thread, but I do want to seperately draw attention to the fact that Fat Penguin is one of the only teams I can think of that really embraces and experiment with and explores form. (Aside from form-specific teams).

I always envy/admired that. I envired it.
